Illegal immigration from China

During July 1978, 505 illegal-immigrants were arrested compared with 433 last month. This is the highest arrest figure since repatriation commenced on 30 November 1974.

Of these 505 arrested, 274 were land crossers, 228 bay crossers and 3 sea crossers, Most of them were between 16 - 25 years of age. All were processed at Ta Ku Ling. Consequently 484 were repatriated during the month, 1 was allowed to stay, and the remaining 20 were awaiting a decision. In addition, 8 illegal immigrants arrested in June were repatriated to China in July. The highest number of illegal immigrants arrested on any one day during the month was 39 on 1 July.

8 local residents were prosecuted for aiding and abetting 12 illegal immigrants from China. Of these, 2 were sentenced to 9 and 12 months imprisonment respectively, and the remaining were remanded until August 1978 for trial.

3 bodies, believed to be those of illegal immigrants drowned whilst attempting entry, were recovered from the sea during the month (2 in the western sector, and 1 in the eastern sector).

The cumulative total of illegal immigrants arrested by or surrendered to the Police and the Army since 1 January 1968 is now 33,662. The yearly totals are as follows:-
