Mr Robert Parry (Liverpool, Scotland Exchange): To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, how many illegal immigrants to Hong Kong from the People's Republic of China have been returned in each of the past five years; and what is the average age of such persons.

The numbers of illegal immigrants returned to China each year since 1974 are:
7,150 (1974)
1,133 (1975)
810 (1976)
1,779 (1977)
to
847 (up to 30 April 1978).
Their average age was approximately 23.
