1. Two MPs, Mr Walter Padley (Labour Ogmore) and Rear-Admiral Morgan-Giles (Conservative - Winchester) have written on behalf of constituents who criticise HMG for allowing the Hong Kong Government to repatriate illegal immigrants to China.

2. Rear-Admiral Morgan-Giles' constituent refers to a figure of nearly 12,000 "refugees" repatriated since 1974. This figure was taken from a reply to a Parliamentary Question from Mr Robert Parry on 8 May. Unfortunately, the department made a mistake in preparing the answer: the right figure is just under 4,800. Mr Luard has written to Mr Parry to apologize for this error and Hansard will be corrected in due course.

3. I recommend that Lord Goronwy-Roberts should reply on the

lines of the attached drafts.
