Repatriation of illegals

15.

During December 576 persons (compared with 753 last month) registered with the Registration of Persons Office, claiming to have entered Hong Kong illegally from various sources. The figure includes 495 persons (compared with 655 last month) claiming to have come from China and 31 (compared with 34 last month) from Macao.

16.

Since 1962, the Registration of Persons Office has registered a total of 321,499 persons who claimed to have entered Hong Kong illegally from various sources, primarily China. The total since January 1970 is 107,744 of whom 90,298 claimed to have come from China and 5,821 from Macao. The true figure of illegal immigrants from China is somewhat lower and the true figure of Macao somewhat higher, because of attempts to conceal the true place of origin on registration to avoid repatriation. Separate statistics of confirmed place of origin are shown in para 11 for China, and para 14 for Macao.

17.

The attached appendices B G give details of arrests of illegal immigrants from China and Macao during December. (N.B. Appendix G (illegal immigration - vessels seized) is NIL return this month and has been omitted to save paper).
