arrivals excluding CPG passport holders is 179,082. 105,761 of these, ie Overseas Chinese and Non-Cantonese who arrived after 30 June 1972, were landed on 12 months limitation of stay and should have applied periodically for extensions of stay. However, our records show that 10,205 of them have not done so and this suggests that they are no longer living in Hong Kong.

Persons who enter legally from China and who are landed for a limited period i e Overseas Chinese and Non- Cantonese, must obtain Declarations of Identity and re-entry visas for Hong Kong if they wish to travel. During February the traffic in such persons was as follows:-

Since 1 January 1974, 83,316 holders of Declarations of Identity departed for China and 68, 202 returned to Hong Kong. The great majority had returned there to visit their families. The similar figures for Macao and elsewhere are available only since 1 April 1975; these are:-

Illegal immigration from China

During February 1978, 199 illegal immigrants were

arrested compared with 178 last month.

Of these 199 arrested, 107 were land crossers, 68 bay crossers and 24 sea crossers. Most of them were between 16- 25 years of age. All were processed at Ta Ku Ling. Consequently 191 were repatriated during the month, 5 were allowed to stay and the remaining 3 were awaiting a decision. In addition 3 illegal immigrants arrested in January were repatriated to China in February. The highest number of illegal immigrants arrested on any one day during the month was 28 on 7 February

One local resident was convicted and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for aiding and abetting the entry of 3 illegal immigrants from China.

9 bodies, believed to be those of illegal immigrants drowned whilst attempting entry, were recovered from the sea during the month (3 in the western sector, 2 in the southern sector and 4 in the northern sector).
