APPENDIX 58, (a translated copy)
His Excellency the Governor of Hong Kong,
Governor House,
Garden Road,
Hong Kong,
15th May, 1978.
Your Excellency,
For the future of the school, to protest against the revenge and prosecution that Miss Kwan, the principal of our school has taken on us and our students.and to raise our objections to all the unreasonable and anti- educational policies in our school, we, together with the parents and students, petitioned Your Excellency and the Most Rev. Bishop Wu a few days ago, hoping that Your Excellency and the Most Rev. Bishop would do justice to us by dismissing Miss Kwan from her post as principal so that the school will be back to normal again. Hopeful that the matter would soon be settled, we waited for four days and three' nights outisde the Bishop's residence for the Most Rev. Bishop to appoint a time to meet us.
Unfortunately, just at a time when things seemed to be taking a new turn as different parties tried to mediate, as the Most Rev. Bishop sent his representatives to talk to the parents, students and us, and as our students and we ended our protest, out of everyone's expectation, the Education Department abruptly announced the closure of the school, establishing a new school on the same site, retaining the Supervisor and the principal in the new school while dismissing us, the 16 protesting teachers. The act is enforced irrespective of the studies of thousands of students. The consequences of the blow to these innocent school girls are too severe to be estimated,
How every, conscientious person deplores and resents this action! What excuse can the authorities concerned give to the students, parents and the general public?
The extension and aggravation of the matter have only shown us that the revenge the school is taking on us for ex- posing the financial irregularities is reaching a climax. Closing the school is certainly not the way to solve any problems, and a high-handed policy will only push things to a deadlock, We strongly protest against the unreasonable closure order imposed by the Education Department. We request Your Excellency to remedy the irrational move, punish those who are responsible for such a reckless and imprudent act, and rectify the abnormal learning conditions in the school.
Yours faithfully,
signed by the 16 protesting
teachers,
