1. Teaching and Learning

(1) The Students

In 1973 when the school was newly established; tuere w

7 form I classes and 5 form II classes. Most of the form I students

were students who failed in the Secondary School Entrance Examination

while most of the form II students left their previous secondary

schools for poor conduct or poor results in the examinations. Such

being the case, the immediate problems facing the teachers were to

help the students with their studies and their behavior.

(ii) The Teachers

Starting from the beginning of the first term, all the

teachers were working strenuously to plan the school curricula,

and prepare suitable teaching materials and teaching aids for

students. As most of the text books available in the market vere

either not very satisfactory or not suitable for the students, some

teachers took great pains to write their own texts or make

translation of the suitable texts from English to Chinese.

(iii) Teaching Methods & Relationship Between Teachers and Students

In order to get the students participate actively in

class and develop their abilities to question, comprehend and hold

opinions, self-study and particularly group-study in the classroOM

were extensively adopted. The teachers treated the s、udens as

equals and never tried to build up an image of authority.

students were often encouraged to see the teachers after lessons to

talk about any problems they came across in their studies or even

their own personal problems.

iv

Academic Performance

The

With regard to learning, what the teachers cared about

was students' attitude towards their studies throughout the whole

school year rather than their results in examinations. A conscien-

tious, sincere and initiative attitude was considered more importan i

than book-learning.

Nevertheless, the form V students who sat for the School

Certificate Examination last year got results which were quite

satisfactory. For examples, 75% of the students passed English

Language Syllabus B paper, which is a relatively difficult paper
