WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT DOING TO ALLEVIATE THE PLIGHT OF

VIETNAMESE REFUGEES?

1. The United Kingdom has accepted 1,306 Indo-Chinese refugees

since the fall of South Vietnam in 1975. Nearly 700 of them are

so-called "boat refugees". In addition, the Government has

undertaken to admit for settlement in the United Kingdom all

refugees from Vietnam rescued by UK-registered vessels who are

not acceptable for resettlement elsewhere. This apart, the

Home Secretary is examining urgently and sympathetically whether

to admit further groups of Indo-Chinese refugees.

HAS THE GOVERNMENT REMONSTRATED WITH THE VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT

ABOUT THE MASS EXODUS FROM VIETNAM? .

2. Yes. The responsibility for creating this deplorable

refugee problem rests squarely on the shoulders of the Vietnamese

Government. We have made it abundantly clear to them that we

abhor their human rights record in this regard.
