ANNEX VII
1. The British government continue to be committed to Lebanon's territorial integrity and to support the efforts of President Sarkis to restore full stability and peace to Lebanon. We have expressed our readiness to help wherever possible. In 1976/77, we gave £500,000 in humanitarian relief aid to Lebanon, mainly in the form of donations to the International Red Cross and the UN Trust Fund for Lebanon. In March this year, we gave £250,000 in response. to a UNHCR appeal for a village resettlement programme, chiefly in Northern Lebanon. The Israeli invasion of Southern Lebanon followed shortly afterwards, and the ODM Disaster Unit was able to provide quickly, approximately £130,000 worth of emergency disaster relief in the form of blankets, tents and food.
2.
In addition, ODM has a continuing Technical Cooperation pro- gramme, worth £150,000 in the current year and used to provide help to projects such as a poultry vaccine research laboratory and a technical school. £5,000 of medical equipment was also recently given to the Palestinian Red Crescent in Lebanon, with a further £5,000 to follow. Finally, the government this year gave £100,000 to help with running costs to the Asfuriyeh mental hospital in Lebanon, a private charitable institution with British connexions.
