CANADIAN ASSISTANCE TO INDOCHINESE REFUGEES

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. Poul Hartling, today announced that the Canadian Government has contributed 500,000 Canadian dollars to UNHCR for relief operations in Thailand. Canada has since 1975 provided over US$ 5,700,000 for UNHCR programmes to assist refugees and displaced persons in South East Asia.

The Canadian Government further announced that it would be admitting 20 Indochinese families a month from Thailand as refugees. These people will. be in addition to the 50 families of Vietnamese boat people who have been admitted monthly since the beginning of this year. Since 1975 Canada has accepted more than 7,000 refugees from South East Asia.
