I attach a reply to Mr Trippy Tetter of 21 August from Bangkok about the problem of Vietnamese "small boat" refugees. Mr Tripp's letter was triggered by an earlier one from Sir Donald Hawley in Kuala Lumpur about the plight of refugees in Malaysia. Hong Kong have also commented. We have discussed the issues raised in Sir Donald Hawley's letter with him and he is not expecting a separate reply to his letter. We are now discussing with interested FCO departments and the Home Office what further measures we might take to help alleviate the problem.
