WIDOW'S PENSION

The standard weekly rate of widow's pension is £14.50 and a widow may get it in any of the following ways.

a.

If, when widow's allowance ends, she has no children and was over 40 years of age, when her husband died and had been married for one year. or more;

Or

If, when widowed mother's allowance ends, she is over 40 years of age and 1 year has passed since the date of her marriage; or

c. If, at the time when either widow's allowance or widowed

mother's allowance ends, she is unable to support herself because of some bodily or mental infirmity which is likely, to be prolonged; or

d. If, at the time widow's allowance or widowed mother's

allowance ends, she is pregnant by her late husband.

In the case of a. and., widow's benefit continues until the age of 60.. In the case of c. it continues as long as the incapacity for self support lasts; and in the case of d. it continues for the duration of the pregnancy.

WHAT ARE THE CONTRIBUTION CONDITIO NS?

Only the husband's contributions count for conditions cannot be fulfilled on the widow's own insurance record.

There are two contribution conditions:-

SECOND:

the husband must have paid 250 contributions since 3 October 1955. If he was paying contributions before the date under the Employment Injuries Insurance Scheme, such contributions to a maximum of 100 will count for the total of 250 contributions required under this condition.

the husband must have paid or been credited with an average of 45 contributions a year since 3 October 1955. If the second condition is not satisfied, reduced rates of benefit may be payable, provided that there is an annual average of not less than 13 contributions paid or credited.

23. HOW AND WHEN TO CLAIM WIDOW'S BENEFIT

A form on which to claim can be obtained from the Department of Labour and Social Security. The form, when completed, should be returned, together with the husband's death certificate, a certificate of marriage and widow's birth certificate.

If a claim is delayed more than 6 months after the husband's death the widow shall lose some benefit.

Widow's benefit stops if the widow re-married or cohabits with another man as his wife.
