Qr

Thank you for your letter of 6 October letting me know that Mr. Cryer has declined to retract his statement.

2. I shall just have to keep my head down and if approached by the Chinese Manufacturers Association stick to the line that individual junior members of the Government are entitled to their own opinions and that what Mr. Cryer may have said late at night in another context should not be regarded as a considered statement of HMG's views.

3. I shall certainly let you know if the subject is raised again. May I take it that Mr. Wong's letter to The Times was published but that there was no development of correspondence in the letter columns.
