minimum of 10% of the regular wage must be given for work during the night shift. Malaysia is the only country which limits the maximum number of hours worked on shifts to 144 in any three-week period. Although Hong Kong has no restrictions on shift work by men, shift work by women after 11 p.m. is prohibited except with the approval of the Commissioner for Labour on special conditions.

Maximum weight to be carried by women and young persons

In Hong Kong the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Regulations stipulate that no women or young persons employed in an industrial undertaking shall be permitted to carry any load which is unreasonably heavy having regard to their age and physical development.

3.19.

On maximum weight for women, the Philippines specifies a maximum weight of 9 Kg. for continuous or repetitive operations and 13.6 Kg. for discontinuous operations. Thailand adopts a range of 30 - 35 Kg. for lifting operations, and 300 - 600 Kg. for pulling

or pushing operations. The other countries do not have legislation in this regard.

As regards the maximum weight for young persons, Hong Kong is the only territory which specified a maximum weight of 30 catties (18 Kę young persons aged 14 15. The maximum weight

is either not specified in other countries' legislation or there is no legislation on this

matter.

Despite the absence in most countries of a statutory maximum weight for women and young persons, the weaker physique of women and young persons is generally recognised. Women and young persons are not expected to carry any load which is unreasonably heavy.
