(h) Training

The Air Traffic Services Section does its own training of controllers; in addition to these, the student controllers are sent abroad to the U.K. for the Aerodrome and Approach Control Primary Course and to New Zealand for the Precision Approach Radar Course. These overseas training courses not only help our controllers to obtain thèse ratings but also enables them to have an insight of the operations and systems of other countries.

Working Environment

A new Air Traffic Control Centre, which is under construction and expected to become operational in mid 1979, will be equipped with the most modern equipment. The present ATCC has Approach, En Route and Secondary Surveillance Radar facilities (ASR, RSR and SSR).

. A separate rest room is provided for controllers where they can relax during breaks, and there is available a staff canteen for snacks and meals.

The Air Traffic Control Centre and Tower are both in the Kai Tak International Airport, which is in the town district and in view of the limited land available there are at present no existing recreation facilities at the place of work. However, consideration is being given to allocating some land within the Airport boundaries for such purpose when it becomes available.

Medical Standards

All Hong Kong Air Traffic Control Officers must satisfy the medical standards laid down in ICAO Annex 1 Chapter 6. Medical examinations are carried out on initial issue of the ATC Licence and thereafter annually.

Electro-cardiograph examinations are conducted on initial issue of the licence and thereafter

(i) up to the age of 30 years, no less frequently than 5 yearly,

(ii) between 30 and 40 years of age, no less frequently than two

yearly, and

(iii) over 40 years of age, no less frequently than annually.

Chest X-Rays are carried out on initial issue and thereafter every two years.

A high medical standard is maintained across the age spectrum and there have been no stress-induced problems.
