I called on Miss Jonny Little who is head

of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Labour Party. Iron line to time they brood on Hong Kong but have not done so recently. We had quite a long and not unsympathetic discussion, but during it it appeared that the application of ILO Conventions was a mulcter that they were interested in and it was a subject on which I was no expert. I agreed to obtain material for them.

After the meeting I spoke to Harry Hurst who sent a master list showing :

(a)

Conventions applied by Hong Kong without modification (22 Conventions);

(b)

Conventions applied with modifications (3.5 Conventions); and

(c)

Conventions which Hong Kong does not apply, having made declarations of "decisions reserved" (30 Conventions).

He added that two recent conventions ratified by the UK were still under consideration in Hong Kong, namely:

No. 142 Human Resources Development 1975

Tripartite Consultetion (International Labour Standards ) 1976.

No. 144

Miss Little was particularly interested, of course in Conventions ratified by the UK but not extended to Hong Kong. Harry Hurst has pointed out that for practical purposes there are 69 Conventions which are actually or
