Officers and the engineers employed by the
Corporation and by the contractors, have continued with their task of keeping in touch with the public, informing them of the circumstances and attempting wherever possible to minimise the difficulties that railway construction undoubtedly brings about. We, in the Corporation, continue to be grateful for the degree of tolerance and understanding shown to us by the public. Directors and Staff
The number of staff employed by the Corpora- tion is now more than 1,000, a far cry from the 150 employees with which the Corporation started its existence in September 1975. An immense amount of work has been undertaken during 1977 which is a tribute to all staff members concerned.
The very size of the project and the progress made has contributed to very satisfactory staff relations within the Corporation despite the fact that staff members are scattered between offices in Central, Wanchai and site offices stretching from Chater Road to Kwun Tong. At the end of 1978,
the Corporation's Administration Building at Kowloon Bay will be ready for occupation and it will then be possible to concentrate all other than site staff in one building.
During the year, Mr. M.G.R. Sandberg left the Board of the Corporation upon his appointment as Chairman of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. Mr. Sandberg had been associated with the Mass Transit Railway for
many years and was a member of the Provisional Authority, the forerunner to the Corporation from its inception in March 1974. The Corporation is a commercial corporation which has to pay its
way and Mr. Sandberg over those formative years made a major contribution towards the creation of commercial attitudes and, in particular, played a significant part in the formation of the Corporation's financial strategy for fund raising. Mr. Sandberg's place on the Board has been taken by Mr. John Boyer. Again, the contribution made by the non-executive directors of the Board towards the Corporation's affairs is appreciated, particularly bearing in mind that their considerable responsibilities elsewhere in Hong Kong increase rather than decrease.
Conclusion
The half-way point in construction of the first phase of the Railway from Central to Kwun Tong has been passed and the designs for the Tsuen Wan Extension are proceeding satisfactorily. So far, so good but half-way there means half-way
yet to go. The Corporation has demonstrated its ability to overcome the problems that must
normally be associated with a project of this
size and complexity and the exciting prospect
remains of opening on time and within budget.
