The contracts for the remaining civil engineering works down Nathan Road, the immersed tube under the harbour and the stations and tunnels in Central which were let in March 1976, made further substantial progress during 1977. In the station areas in Nathan Road and Central, that part of the construction which causes the greatest inconvenience to pedestrians and shopkeepers, the putting down of the station walls, is nearing completion and the next following process, that of excavation between the walls has already commenced.
The first 4 of the 14 sections of the immersed tube under the harbour are now in position and the next 4 sections have been completed in the drydock at Chaiwan specially built for this
purpose, and are now in the process of being
positioned on the harbour bed. This particular
contract, critical to completion of the Railway
was some five months late at the beginning of the year but by the end of the year had recovered the time lost and is now back on schedule.
Again the civil engineering contracts in Nathan Road and on the Island have not been without their difficulties. The contract for Argyle Station has gone slowly and is the subject of a dispute on a point of interpretation which could result in court proceedings. Following the adoption of
revised construction methods, however, which concentrated on progressing the track levels of the station, the opening date for these sections of the line, March 1980, should not be affected
although there is the possibility that Argyle Station itself will not be fully completed by that time.
It has to be emphasised that civil engineering difficulties of this nature are normal in the varied ground conditions that obtain in Hong Kong.
Indeed, the Corporation has been fortunate in that relatively few delays have resulted from such difficulties.
Altogether, therefore, a year of substantial
progress in civil engineering construction where
all the main contractors concerned have
continued to demonstrate their ability to over-
come the problems typical of a project of this size and complexity.
All the electrical and mechanical contracts being
carried out in the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and the United States have gone well and
are on time. In the United Kingdom, the first two
rail cars have successfully completed manufac- turers' tests at the Tyne & Wear test track in northern England and the next 4 cars are approaching completion in the works of Metro- Cammell in Birmingham. The first 2 cars to be
