The Corporation
During the second full year of the Corporation's existence which ended on 31st December 1977, satisfactory progress continued with both the civil engineering and the electrical and mechanical contracts for the Modified Initial System, the first phase of the Mass Transit Railway. Also
Government agreed that the second phase of the
Railway should proceed, the Extension to
Tsuen Wan.
Contracts
The civil engineering contracts for the Modified Initial System passed the half-way mark in
January 1978 and during 1977 in North Kowloon the first of these contracts, let in October 1975,
made substantial progress towards completion.
Approximately 10 kilometres of tunnel are
now concreted out ready for track laying
which has already commenced at the Kowloon Bay Depot. The underground stations at Shek Kip Mei, Kowloon Tong, Lok Fu, Wong Tai Sin, Diamond Hill and Choi Hung have, in many instances, been completed down to track level and in all cases are nearing that stage. The overhead section of the Railway, including the stations at Kowloon Bay, Ngau Tau Kok and Kwun Tong made excellent progress and there is
every possibility that the opening of this overhead
section of the line will be brought forward by
some six months to coincide with the planned
opening of the underground section from Shek Kip Mei to Choi Hung in September 1979. Thus it is possible that in September next year approxi- mately one-half of the Modified Initial System will be opened to the public.
Civil engineering construction has not, however, been without its difficulties. At the Kowloon Bay Depot, for example, the initial piling contract fell behind schedule by some six months which has delayed the immediately following contracts for the columns and the podium structure which they support. Nonetheless, this piling contract has now been virtually completed and approximately a fifth of the total podium area of 25 acres has been built. The construction of the Corporation's Administration Building on the podium is well under way and construction of the
first residential block on the podium is about to commence. These initial delays at Kowloon Bay should not affect the planned opening dates for the Railway.
As indicated, the track-laying at Kowloon Bay
and also in the tunnels from Kowloon Bay to Choi
Hung has begun in anticipation of rolling stock
deliveries and the commencement of commis-
sioning and test running during 1978.
