on street unsegregated operation, as now, may be considerably
improved, perhaps to an acceptable level. Operations through
this area need not be fast, but they must be reliable if the
efficient operation of the Central tunnels and the remainder
of the LRT system is not to be prejudiced.
There would appear to be no intrinsic difficulty in integrating
an LRT Route into a redesigned Connaught Road West improvement
though it could not be achieved until about 1982. Initially,
the service might lose some traffic because it lies some distance
away from the principal existing traffic generators, though this
might be offset by the higher speed and greater reliability of
service on the new alignment. In the longer term, additional
traffic will be generated by the new land uses located on the
adjacent reclamation.

Tunnel construction is difficult in Western: the narrow street
widths have required the proposed MTR stations, for instance, to
be constructed with one line vertically above the other, rather
than in the usual less expensive side-by-side manner.
It would
appear however, that side by side construction could be possible
in Des Veoux Road West, provided rolling stock width was no greater than 2.5m (compared with 3.0m of MTR).
At this stage rather than reach a specific conclusion on which
LRT alignment would ultimately be required between Western Market and Whitty, it seems more appropriate to have a policy which
commences with on-street operation in Des Voeux Road West, but
keeps open the alternatives of a Connaught Road West alignment or
a tunnel along Des Voeux Road West, if satisfactory on-street
operation cannot be acheived. The flexibility on an LRT system
allows such a policy to be persued.

Chaiwan Extension The Chaiwan extension is important, not only because Chaiwan is a rapidly developing area which will produce
an above average increase in travel demand but also because of
the usefulness of an extension for access to the depot site.
