After an exchange of courtesies Sir Lawrence turned to
the Power Station project. In reply to Sun's questions he explained that work on the site would begin in about a month's time. The first machine (capacity 350 megawatts) would be complete by 1982 and three further sets of the same capacity would be completed by 1983, 1984 and 1986 respectively. capacity of the 4 sets would be 1400 megawatts.

2. Sir Lawrence went on to explain that the new power station would burn coal as well as oil (he mentioned that CLF was
already importing 10,000 tons p.a. of China oil for existing plant). CLF hoped to buy 65%-70% of the coal requirement for the new power station from China. Experts would be arriving in China on 28 May for discussions and visits to sample Chinese coal and see how it could be adapted to the burners in Hong Kong. He expressed his strong desire that everything should be done to strengthen the links between Hong Kong and China and cooperation over coal and electricity was an excellent way of doing this. There were many ways in which both sides could cooperate to their mutual benefit. For example, there were plans to electrify the railway from Kowloon to Shumchun and it would perhaps be possible to work out a scheme to cooperate over the electrification of the line from Shumchun to Canton (60 miles). Another possibility for cooperation would be to join the electricy from the new power station in Hong Kong
(which would have a very high voltage - 400,000 volts) to the
