Dear John
Thank you for your letter of 31 March in response to mine of 28 March about the Prime Minister seeing Sir Lawrence Kadoorie.
Mr Williams returned to London yesterday after being present in Hong Kong on Saturday at the signing of the power station contract. After the ceremony Mr Williams discussed with the directors of China Light and Power the prospects for three further contracts for units 3 and 4 of the power station (£70 million +), a new transmission system (£150 million) and gas turbines (£30 million). These are already under active consideration by our officials, and it is quite clear from the talks in Hong Kong that CLP want the orders to go to Britain if at all possible. Sir Lawrence Kadoorie's goodwill is very important to securing them and my Minister believes that a fifteen minute meeting with Sir Lawrence would yield a very good
return.
I now understand that Sir Lawrence is now staying in London until Wednesday 19 April, and perhaps this might make it possible for the Prime Minister to see him briefly.
Copies go to Martyn Baker (Department of Trade), Ewen Fergusson (FCO), Kingsley Jones (HM Treasury) and James Bretherton (Department of Energy).
Yours sincerely
