Thank you for your letter of 23 June about Sir Lawrence Kadoorie's recent visit to China and for sending me the draft of a reply which the Prime Minister might send to the letter which Sir Lawrence addressed to him from Peking on 26 May.

The Prime Minister has seen your letter and has taken note of the background to Sir Lawrence Kadooric's visit. Subject to minor amendments, he has approved the draft reply and I enclose, for your information, a copy of the final text. The signed original goes with a copy of this letter to Kieran Prendergast in the F.C.0.; I should be grateful if he would arrange for it to be forwarded to Sir Lawrence Kadoorie in Hong Kong.

I am also sending a copy of this letter and enclosure to Martyn Baker (Department of Trade).
