Sir Lawrence Kadoorie, Chairman of China Light and Power, is coming to London on Sunday 9 April for a stay of one week. On 12 April he hopes to sign, on behalf of CLP, the Loan Agreement for the supply by GEC of the 700 MW generating equipment. After a holiday in Europe, Sir Lawrence will be returning to Hong Kong via Peking, where he will be discussing the supply of coal for the power station from the Peoples' Republic of China.
These
The Prime Minister has met Sir Lawrence on two occasions. discussions were important to the development of a successful British package and we hope that the Prime Minister will agree to see Sir Lawrence during this visit. The Department of Industry is now preparing proposals for the next stage of the power station and, in addition, for a new transmission system which could involve contracts worth about £150m.
It would be more appropriate for the Prime Minister to see Sir Lawrence after the Loan Agreement has been signed. If the Prime Minister is content and his diary permits we would suggest a short meeting on either Thursday 13 April or Friday 14 April. Perhaps you would let me know if this is all right so that the necessary arrangements can be put in hand.
I am copying this letter to Martyn Baker (Department of Trade), Ewen Fergusson (Foreign and Commonwealth Office), Kingsley Jones (HM Treasury) and James Bretherton (Department of Energy).
Yours sincerely,
