Local exporters are at present rushing shipments of garments to meet the autumn and winter demand. In general, exports to the EEC have reflected
tangible increase over last year's level, whereas those for the United States
market have been kept stable.
The garment sector indicated that the quota price of certain garment
items to the U.K. has reached a new record level of the last three years.
This is because of a transfer of orders to Hong Kong from Portugal, which has drastically cut the supply of woven garments to the U.K. this year.
The quota price of garments to the U.S. fluctuates in respect of individual categories. The price of quota for trousers has risen from $48 to $52 per dz., but, with 720,000 dozens of free quota available for application, quota price for woven cotton blouses has dropped from $28 to $24 per dz. Quota for wool garments has gone down $6 to $22 per dz. Man- made fibre garments, on the other hand, have spiralled to 28 per dz. Compared with the price of $10 in the same period of last year., quota price for the m.m.f. sector has gone up quite substantially. This is attributable to the lack of m.m.f. garment quota in Taiwan and the shift of orders to
Hong Kong.
