HK TEXTILE INDUSTRY GIVEN A SHOT IN THE ARM

HK Economic Journal (8/3)

HK textile manufacturers have received quite a vast amount

of orders from S.E. Asia in recent months, reported some members of the textile

trade. An average increase of 20% over orders accepted last year has been

recorded. Vietnam, for example, has gradually become one of the important

markets for our textiles.

Resourceful manufacturers of HK have made trips to the Philippines,

Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand to broaden our textile markets, formerly restrict-

ed to N. America, Europe and Australia, and woo more orders. Their efforts have

not been wasted.

Reliable sources disclosed that China, through the China Resources

Co.:in HK, plans to invest over HK$50 million in a big cold storage & godown in

Shatin.

Dealers in cold storage bisiness are not happy about the news

because their business will certainly suffer a blow when China, HK's No. 1

frozen food supplier, makes use of its own, instead of relying on local, cold

storage spaces.

However, other traders welcome the news for overseas inves tors

will have greater faith in HK, now that China increases its investment here

faith

and maintains a good relationship with Britain,
