Royal Navy Presence in the Reduced (4 1/3rd) Garrison

A,

ROLE

The Royal Navy role in support of the Hong Kong Government has been defined as :

(a)

primary maintaining the authority of the Hong Kong Government in Colony waters in the face of armed Chinese gunboats which enjoy free passage within the square boundary; and

(b)

secondary to sustain the confidence within Hong Kong of HMG's stated intention to maintain the British position in Hong Kong by pro- viding, through the physical presence of H. M. ships in Colony waters, patrols by up to two patrol craft continuously on task in support of the R. H. K. Marine Police.
