The Chancellor has seen a copy of your Secretary Mr Xof State's minute of 20th July to the Prime Minister.

The Chancellor has no comments on the proposal to maintain five battalions of Gurkhas until a year after the Brunei commitment ends on the understanding that the cost will be contained within defence budget ceilings for the years in question.

I am sending copies of this letter to the Private Secretaries to the other members of DOP and to Martin Vile (Cabinet Office).

Your succondly.
