COS 10/75 defined the governing priorities for long term defence

planning as follows:

Priority 1- Contribution to NATO. The security of

the United Kingdom lies fundamentally in the NATO Alliance.

The United Kingdom's contribution to NATO, which includes

the defence of the United kingdom base, is therefore of

parcmount importance and the major part of the United

Kingdom's defence resources is to be devoted to this
