Dear Bob,

GURKHAS

Volds

Action Taken

*

1. When we discussed by telephone the postponement of Gurkha amalgamation, you asked to be informed of the arrangements made for warning those in the Brigade of Gurkhas and Staffs in Hong Kong who are involved in planning the future of the Brigade. 6 GR and their families in Nepal will also be told that their move to Hong Kông has been similarly delayed.

2. The agreed text for the announcement, which will be disseminated only on a need-to-know basis, was:

"The amalgamation of 1/2 and 2/2 GR originally due to take place in September 1978 is to be postponed by six months. This will affect the Arms Plot move of 6 GR to Hong Kong. 6 GR will now remain in UK until the end of April 1979, being replaced in the UK by a Gurkha battalion yet to be nominated."

If any explanation has to be given for the delay, it will be on the lines that, from the movement, manning and administrative point of view, it is no longer possible to amalgamate by the planned date of September 1978.
