The one thing which is absolutely clear from this tangled history is that there are many subterranean cross-currents of local Macanese politics involved. This being so, I would like to re-emphasise the point made in Hong Kong telegram No. 888 of 15 July that we are likely to pick up a 59 distorted picture from our sources here and in Macau and that we risk further complicating an already confused issue if we probe too much or indelicately.
