Extracts from an article by Mr. Li Chiang,

the Chinese Minister of Foreign Trade published

in the October issue of the "Red Flag".

"Hong Kong and Macau are our territories where 98 per cent of the population are our compatriots. The issue of Hong Kong and Macau is one of history. It will be resolved in an appropriate manner when conditions are ripe.

"At present the supply of goods to Hong Kong and Macau is a special question in the foreign trade of our country.

"Chairman Mao and the Party Centre had paid great attention to Hong Kong and Macau, and had laid down correct lines and policies on this matter. Premier Chou gave directives that whenever possible, the whole country should contribute to exports to Hong Kong and Macau. The problem was not only economic but political.

"In Hong Kong, the political and economic situation is complicated, and competition in the market is very acute. We must therefore implement our policies correctly and actively do a good job in supplying goods to Hong Kong and Macau.

"Wang Hung-wen and his gang even attempted to ruin policies of the Party Centre on Hong Kong and Macau, and our relationship with the compatriots in the two territories.

"So far we have done well in supplying goods to Hong Kong and Macau with goods coming from different areas stretching across the country. Compatriots in Hong Kong and Macau consider these supplies sent from the motherland as an indication of our care and concern for them.

"Though the supply of goods to Hong Kong and Macau was interrupted. for a period because of the interference and sabotage by the gang of four we must now continue the good job and increase our supplies to Hong Kong and Macau.”
