Brunei
1. The Gurkha battalion in Brunei is
earmarked as part of the reinforcements for the Hong Kong garrison, (which consists
of 3 other Gurkha battalions and one British battalion, plus supporting units).
The facilities in Brunei also provide useful training and acclimatization for the Gurkha Brigade as well as a third possible posting for them. The Governor of Hong Kong was therefore concerned at the possible implications for Hong Kong when it seemed possible that HMG would terminate the present treaty with Brunei and consequently withdraw the Gurkhas.
2. The Sultan of Brunei has now agreed to negotiate a new treaty with Britain under which the Gurkha battalion are likely to stay in Brunei for a further five years.
3. Should the negotiations break down, so that it becomes necessary to withdraw the Gurkhas, the Ministry of Defence have confirmed that they will fully consult the Hong Kong Government. They recognise the obligation to provide reinforcements in accordance with the Defence Costs Agreement and the Joint Theatre Plan for the Hong Kong area on a timescale comparable to that which is possible with the battalion in Brunei. They are confident that this can be achieved.
