still focussed on Hong Kong's social
problems and their solution, and the
(Return Home) movement that

started some years ago appears to have
lost momentum. This may be partly
because of the confusion arising from
the Fall of the Gang of Four. Student newspapers which had previously criticized Teng Siao Ping and his revisionism quietly withdrow from commenting on China affairs. There was much embarrass- ment and uncertainty about the sudden change in party line. Increased fre- quency of China visits may have made then better informed about China's true present-day conditions, which are much inferior to Hong Kong standards. On the other hand, the China's open door policy, and her earnest attempt to attract western trained technologists and professional personnel to serve in China is bound to have a certain amount of appeal on those motivated by altruistic patriotism among Hong Kong's intelligentsia.
