General attitudes
(a)
It is now widely believed that a crucial factor of Hong Kong's stability depends on the maintaining of congenial relations between Hong Kong, and Peking, and the economic value of Hong Kong to China is an important factor favourable to Hong Kong's continued stability. (b) It is also believed that China's new
economic policy after the fall of the Gang of Four has enhanced the value of Hong Kong to China.

hope that the Teng Siao Ping policies will continue and that the present leadership will stay in power.

A factor of uncertainty frequently mentioned is what type of leader will succced Teng after his death, and
whether there will be another political power struggle when he dies.
Better informed circles are convinced that the Peking-Moscow confrontation leaves China with no alternative but to co-operate with U.S., the EEC, and Japan to speed up her modernization programmes and this is advantageous to Hong Kong because of the Colony's unique position.
China's emergence as a major power on the international scene has considerably enhanced her influence and prestige amongst overseas Chinese communities and the Chinese community in Hong Kong is in many ways particularly sensitive
