Coverage of current affairs concerning China increased very considerably. Most of it emphasized the highly congenial and ever improving London- Peking and Hong Kong-Peking relations, and the rapid expansion of economic and diplomatic activities reflecting drastically enlarging areas of

Co-operation and communication. (2) Right-wing press reports on China

affairs have become basically factual accounts, giving good coverage to important events without unfavourable comment, apart from

some occasional feature articles which focussed on China's problems and shortfalls, and misgivings about possible adverse effects of China's new economic policy on Hong Kong in the long term. Others stressed significant economic growth and progress in Taiwan. A major event, such as the Hong Kong-Canton inau- gural flight was covered by all leading papers except the Hong Kong Times.
