The China Travel Services has planned more than 20 tours to Kwangtung recently in order to satisfy compatriots' desire to visit the province. Four of the tours will be in September, four in October, six in November and eight in December. Interested people can apply at CTS office. Late comers will not be entertained.

China has decided to go seriously into the tourist business and has put up for tender to overseas capitalist businessmen the construction and running of tourist resorts just across the border.

It was also learned that beside Shumchun, the Chinese government is planning to develop Tsinshan near the Macao China border into a special tourist zone.

(Ta Kung Pao: August 31)

More than 250,000 Chinese from Hongkong, Macao, Taiwan and foreign lands and nearly 50,000 foreigners came to China in the first half of this year. And more tourists are expected to visit the country in the remaining part of the year.

To promote tourism, China has so far opened to tourists a hundred cities, scenic spots and major industrial and agricultural centres, half of them being new tourist attractions added since the beginning of the year.

(South China Morning Post: August 31)

Anxious about its image and criticisms by foreign travellers, China has begun a

campaign to improve the tourist industry.

For four days in the middle of this month the Chinese Daily Reference News, which is unavailable to foreigners, printed a page a day on the subject, Chinese sources said today.

The newspaper, which only carries news from the foreign press, published criticisms made by foreign tourists and particularly by overseas Chinese returning to Hongkong, and recently visiting journalists.

(South China Morning Post: September 12)

Non-Chinese residents in Hongkong will soon have an opportunity to see Kunming, Chengtu and Chungking which only special guests could visit in the past.

The tour includes three forms of transport - a flight to Kunming from Canton, then a journey, by rail through the treacherous gorges of Yunnan and Szechuan to Chengtu. Chungking's next and then down the Yangtzekiang through the famous "Three Gorges" by river boat to Wuhan.

The first such trip is to be made on October 6 by a group of local travel agents and journalists. The trip will last 16 days.

(South China Morning Post: September 25)

Hong Kong travel agents will be arranging tours for about 600 foreign visitors to China by the end of this year.

And the number is likely to double next year, said a spokesman for Patterson Travel Service, one of the 10 agents approved by Chinȧ Travel Service to organise such

tours.

Nanning

At present there are two tours to Canton only, and to Canton, Kweilin and

but four new tours will be added in the autumn.

The new tours are Canton-Lushan Canton, Canton-Peking, Canton-Hangchow- Shanghai-Peking-Canton and Canton-Kunming Nanning-Canton.
