Chief of Defence Staff's Visit
10: The Chief of the Defence Staff, Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Neil Cameron has accepted an invitation to pay an official visit to China in April 1978. Although full details of the programme have not yet been finalized, Sir Neil has asked to visit Units of all elements of the People's Liberation Army. During his visit, the first by a United Kingdom Chief of Defence, CDS proposes to take a broad approach to defence topics and exchange information on the structure, role and organisation of the Armed Forces. He hopes to be in a position to offer a reciprocal visit during which single-service contacts can be made.7
RCDS Visit
11.
Renewed Chinese interest in early 1977 for defence exchanges created the opportunity to arrange a visit by a party of Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS) students, a visit of an informal nature which was seen as having considerable merit as a forerunner to an official visit
at a higher level. The visit, which formed a part of a Far Eastern tour which also included Korea, Japan and Hong Kong, took place from 5-14 October 1977. We are hoping to offer a visit to a Chinese medical delegation, in return for this visit, and to arrange a further visit by the RCLS this Autumn but no approach has yet been made for these visits and they should not be mentioned.
