To make certain changes in assistance given by Government towards education related expenses.

Progress made and present position

A few projects in the current secondary school building programme have been delayed because of site formation difficulties. Consideration is being given to finding alternative sites for some of these projects.

Part II

The White Paper on Senior Secondary and Tertiary Education proposed a further stage of the building programme, consisting of schools to be built after 1981, mainly in the developing new towns, in order to make up for the loss in junior secondary places arising from the restructuring of classes and the opening of special classes. Sites are now being sought for

these schools.

Proposals for increases to senior secondary fres were included in the White Paper, "The Develop- ment of Senior Secondary and Tertiary Education". Finance Committee Increases to fees in other institutions have also been agreed.

As the Director of Education has indicated that there are no suitable alternative benefits that should be introduced when the student travel subsidies are withdrawn, it has been decided to proceed with an Executive Council Memorandum recommending termination of the subsidies with out any compensating benefit, noting that in order to ensure that adequate resources are available to meet priority items, it is necessary to terminate other items of expenditure which are of lesser importance.
