VISIT TO HONG KONG

1.

Richard Samuel, my landlord, has just let me know that he would like to occupy his house in March next year. I would therefore wish to make my month's visit to Hong Kong, which has already been approved in principle, in March. I should be grateful for your approval to my taking leave from 2 to 28 March, amounting altogether to 15 days leave since I shall be on duty for one week whilst in Hong Kong.

2.

There is one other point which I would like to be considered (I have already mentioned it briefly to Mr Morrice) and that is whether it would be possible to include Peking in my visit. I would not normally be allowed to go there but both Mr Morrice and Mr Webb have done so. It would, I believe, be a very valuable experience for me, indeed a chance of a lifetime. such a trip were agreed, my wife would wish to go with me but I would pay her expenses.

1. I see no difficulties over Mr Williamson's absence for virtually the whole of the month of March 1981.

So

2. I feel bound to support his request that he should visit Peking officially when he goes on his duty tour/leave to Hong Kong. much of our work has a China angle to it and a good deal of the activities of the Chancery and Consular Section in Peking is con- cerned with Hong Kong affairs. A short visit to Peking and possibly Canton - would be of great value to Mr Williamson in his present job and would be of long-term benefit to him- and to the Hong Kong Government on his return to Hong Kong. I therefore enthusiastically support his request, although we shall need to consider carefully nearer the time how his visit should be presented in Peking.
