Table 4C shows the shortfall of self-contained living

quarters in Hong Kong from 1978 to 1985. A self-contained quarter

means one with the following basic facilities :

(i)

water supply;

(ii) internal W.C. and

(iii) cooking space.

On the assumption that all households (including one and

two persons) each occupy one living quarter, the shortfall in

self-contained living quarters is expected to drop from 398,000 in

1978 to 274,000 by 1985, a decrease of 31%.

There are currently, 132,000 non-self-contained living

quarters of which 67% or 89,000 are in Mark I/II public housing

blocks. The redevelopment programme should reduce this figure to

53,000 by 1985.

Table 4D illustrates the shortfall of self-contained living

quarters in Hong Kong if it is assumed, as in the Hong Kong Development

Plan, that 60% of all single and two persons household could, if

necessary, continue to share accommodation and that 40% of such

households require self-contained public or private housing. The

shortfall of self-contained living quarters is then expected to change

from a deficit of 208,000 in 1978 to a theoretical surplus of 2,090 by

1985. This implies that by about 1982 more attention can be given to

the housing needs of single and two person households.
