A high standard of living,

rest days and paid holidays have totally changed the

situation, but I think also that there was a vacuum

in the life of Hong Kong for all age groups, a

recreational and cultural vacuum which might even have

carried with it some danger, and one which the people

of Hong Kong were only too glad to fill given a lead

and some encouragement and some money.

54. To my mind this change in the leisure interests

of Hong Kong symbolises just as dramatically as the

changed silhouettes of the skyscrapers, the strides

that are being taken in social and economic life of

this community.
