Certain members of the Urban Council have drawn comparisons between Hong Kong and Macau, where the local equivalent of the Legislative Council has recently been reformed to introduce an elected element. The Macau legislative now consists of one third directly elected members, one third appointed and one third indirectly elected by various professional groups. There are of course important differences between Hong Kong and Macau, which mean that comparisons between political systems in the two territories cannot be carried too far. But we shall certainly be watching developments in Macau with interest.
