I have been asked to reply to your recent letter to the Secretary of State reporting the results of the survey you had commissioned on the question of elected representa- tion to the Legislative Council in Hong Kong.

We are grateful to you for keeping us informed of your findings, which have been studied with great interest. Although there are no plans to introduce elections to the Legislative Council at the moment, it is extremely valuable to have available so much detailed information about public attitudes towards the subject.
