This is just by way of acknowledgement of your letter of 13 February recommending that Denys Roberts should succeed Geoffrey Briggs on the latter's retirement in March 1979, and that Cater should succeed Denys Roberts by October/November of this year.

It is unfortunate that we should have to decide these appointments before having a decision on your

successor.

However, I see the force of your recommendations. Unfortunately, I shall not have a chance to discuss them with Michael Palliser until he returns from a visit to Eastern Europe at the end of next week, and by then, sadly, I shall be pulling out of this job. I may not, therefore, be able to send you a substantive reply myself - but this need not delay matters.

As you will no doubt by now have heard, Teddy Youde will be taking over from me, and he will be in his new seat by 17 April..
