We discussed with the PUS yesterday the arrangements for the extension of Sir Murray MacLehose's tour of duty.

I see that we do not yet have The Queen's approval to the extension. Perhaps you would ask Hong Kong and General Department, who normally take responsibility for this, if they would now seek it. I have sent a telegram to Sir M MacLehose to tell him that we are now putting this to the Palace, that we would envisage a simple announcement on the lines of that made in January 1977: "Her Majesty The Queen has approved the extension of the Governor's term of office until the end of August 1979"; and asking Sir M MacLehose what timing would suit him best.
