The Secretary of State wrote to Sir Murray MacLehose on 24 January to ask him whether he would be prepared to accept a further extension to his appointment to the Summer of 1979. Sir Murray replied on 13 February that he would. Subsequently the Private Secretary wrote to No. 10 asking if the Prime Minister would agree that we should announce the extension of the Governor's tour to the end of August 1979. The Prime Minister has indicated

that he is content.

2.

Members of the Dependent Territories Senior Appointments Board have agreed that its advice to the Secretary of State should be that Sir Murray MacLehose's appointment should be so extended and that the announcement should be made on Tuesday, 21 March, if Her Majesty agrees to the extension.

Recommendation

3. It is recommended that the Secretary of State should approve the advice of the Dependent Territories Senior Appointments Board.
