CONTROL OF APPOINTMENTS UNDER CR19 Joes & SA.D. E

1. I took the opportunity of Mr Parker's call this morning to ask about his reply (in Port Stanley telno 230) to your letter of 31 July. He explained that the Falkland Islands Police Force was very small (a total of only eight or nine posts on the estab- lishment) and the post of Superintendent of Police was regarded as just another Civil Service appointment. There was, a plan to move the present Superintendent (who was becomming a little difficult) to be Postmaster General, and Mr Parker did not think it would be appropriate to have him appointed to the Police job by the Secretary of State. That would give him ideas and make it all the more difficult to move him.

2. This seems a reasonable point to me. I think we should now go ahead on the basis of the revised list proposed by Mr Parker.
