I am sure that it would be highly desirable for a FCO Legal Adviser to take part in the selection process for Mr Hobley's successor: the eventual appointment will have to be approved by the Secretary of State and we will therefore need Legal Advisers views on the various candidates. I note that Sir I Sinclair will decide who should take part when we know when the interviews are to take place (since there are unlikely to be all that many can- didates they should not take too much time). I should regard someone like Sir A Grattan-Bellew (now 75) as very much second best, and we would presumably have to pay him a fee.
