HONG KONG: JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS

3 cc: Mr Sullivan, WIAD

1. I spoke last night to Mr R LE Dreschfield CMG QC, a former Attorney-General of Uganda now on leave in this country from Bermuda, where he is a Parliamentary draftsman.

2.

I asked him about Mr Gerald Collett, the Attorney-General of Bermuda. Mr Dreschfield said that Collett was a very sound lawyer, who is not likely to remain long in Bermuda since he is unpopular there. He believes that Mr Collett would welcome an appointment to a High Court Judgeship in Hong Kong, for which he would be very well suited. Mr Dreschfield thought that Collett was better suited to a judicial appointment than to a law officership.

3. You may think that we should convey this information to Hong Kong. Mr Dreschfield is very well known to me and I would rely on his judgment.
